CHAPTER TEN
Dave lay in the empty bed. He tried to relax enough to fall asleep. He had chastised himself enough already. It was time to take a break from the 'Dave, you are one big idiot party.'
"When the hell are you going to smarten up, little brother, and leave that jerk?" Jeremy had asked him the last time he'd ended up on his doorstep.
Jeremy had had a hard time with him being gay when Dave had come out in his teens. Dave met Troy shortly after Jeremy came around and accepted that it wasn't 'just a phase', as he'd hoped. His older brother had never liked Troy from day one. He thought him rude, and unpredictable. Sure, Troy could be arrogant, unfeeling at times but Dave understood him. Growing up with Darren could have easily been a case study in the encyclopedia of dysfunctional relationships.
Troy told him things that he never told anyone about what it was like being the son of Darren Mayer. It was not pretty. Troy had developed all kinds of defense mechanisms which turned out to be very unattractive when he was in one of his 'moods'. Underneath, Troy was a hurt little boy who couldn't bear to mention his mother, a mother he'd been torn from at a young age. Often, Troy told David, "I feel like there's a part of me missing." David never really understood that.
When he was growing up, Darren was rarely there for Troy. Troy was reared by his stoic grandfather and frigid housekeeper. Neither one of them had much affection for the boy. Their firm belief in the 'spare the rod, spoil the child' philosophy resulted in Troy receiving regular beatings for very minor infractions. Dave knew that a lot of Troy's unattractive characteristics came from his childhood. Troy could be self-centered and egotistical. He could do things just for the pleasure of inflicting pain on others, and he had a constant need for reassurance and affection.
When it came to his father, Troy was like a puppet on a string. Either he was terrified of him, or had a constant need for his approval. Just a telephone call from Darren could set Troy off, cause him to have an anxiety attack and throw up until all he could do was heave.
When the barriers were stripped away though, Troy could be sweet, and loving. He had a quirky sense of humor and was a pleasure to be with, funny, and intelligent, even childlike. The intensity of the love Troy showed him was revealed in those tender and rare moments. Those moments were real, and it was that he couldn't let go of.
Yes, he was a fool, just like Jeremy told him. He was a fool in love but he'd seen a change in Troy lately. Troy seemed different. It was like he was really trying, it was like he was someone else completely. He was kinder to everyone. He was less stressed but he was also more distant. It was like
